Maker Bot and similar systems are at the forefront of a new level of open source.  Team projects have moved beyond just software applications and are now focusing on making hardware and self building robotic systems within reach of the masses.  The ultimate goal, of course is to have the power of a personal manufacturing center in your own living room.  With the right specifications and materials it should ultimately be able to build any thing you want, when you want it, for the price of just the building materials.
